Virginia's PBS TeacherLine is made available to educators from Portsmouth Public Schools through closed courses taught by Virginia instructors. These courses are FREE OF CHARGE for Portsmouth Public Schools educators and open to PPS educators only.

Graduate credit is available for both courses and graduate credit fees will be covered by Portsmouth Public Schools.

MATH221 Count On It: Number Sense for Grades K-5- 15 hr.

Increase your understanding of “number sense,” the importance it plays in student mathematical development, and strategies to assess it in your students. Examine lesson plans, Web resources, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards to deepen your students’ understanding of numbers. As a final requirement, develop lesson plans for enhancing student learning using both traditional and technological manipulatives.

MATH246 Rational Numbers, Fractions, Decimals, and Percents in Grades 6-8 - 15hr

Help your middle schoolers unravel the mysteries of rational numbers, fractions, decimals and percents. Using sample problems, you will build your understanding of how students approach their study, and learn practical, proven ways to redirect their thinking. For a final project, you will create a rational number lesson plan that includes a student assessment component.
